Sermon for March 1, 2020
On this First Sunday in Lent, we read in
Matthew 4:1-11 about the tempting of Jesus in the desert. The fact that Jesus was led by the Spirit to be tempted teaches us something of great importance. It was by God’s plan and design that Jesus should be “tempted” as Israel had been “tested” in the desert. Jesus was taking our place! He became Israel that He might keep the Covenant with God in our stead!
Nothing takes God by surprise! He is truly in charge of all things!

Ever feel frustrated with the craziness of the world; its values; its direction? In 1 Corinthians 2:1-16, Paul reminds those at the Church in Corinth that they have been given the very “Spirit of God” and the “mind of Christ”, so are able to comprehend the mysteries of God, while the people of the world cannot.
This is why Jesus tells us that we are to be the “salt of the earth.”

Death is one of the few things in this world that we can count on, but that doesn’t make it any
easier to deal with. And the way we typically deal with death is either by avoiding the topic
completely, or by an equally unhealthy acceptance of it as a “natural part of life.”
The fact is, God wants us to understand death, not avoid it! And when we understand it, we
learn that there is nothing “natural” about it!
Death is not a part of God’s economy. He is the God of the living, not the dead! And the best
way to deal with it is to understand that Christ has dealt with it for us!

Sermon for January, 26th 2020
1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 urges us to rejoice always! Do you realize that if we took that as seriously as God intends, we would be defined by our joyful attitude and people would want to know what has given us such hope! Actually, I think that’s the point!
This year, for National Lutheran Schools Week, we focus on the joy that we have in being Lutheran Christians. We understand that living a sanctified life is not a life of tiresome effort, but it is simply living in joyful thanksgiving for His grace and mercy every moment of every day!

In our Gospel lesson this week, Jesus’ actions confound John the Baptist to the point that John asks if Jesus is the one that he is should be looking for, or should he expect another.
It is easy to feel let down by Jesus when He does not conform to our image of Him. However, if we continue to trust in Jesus’ rule and reign over our lives despite the fact that things are not going as we may have planned, understanding that His Ways are not our ways, we find ourselves genuinely blessed.
